Spring Practice Set to Begin!

Sunday May 10, 2009

When the Sequatchie County Indians hit the practice field tomorrow you will see several missing faces and not just the graduated seniors off last seasons playoff team. That's because around ten players and one coach are still playing baseball as the Diamond Indians (14-10) who finished second in the District 6-AA Tournament to Marion County is scheduled to be playing tomorrow evening in the Region 3-AA Tournament at McMinn Central who has only lost a handful of games all season. If the Indians win they will take on the Marion County/Polk County winner later this week. While it would be great for the entire team to be ready to go for spring practice I think its great that so many athletes are participating in other sports and it shows with this past season's football team making the playoffs for the first time in three years and this springs baseball team I can't remember the last time the baseball team made the region tournament. If you go back and look on the success of the athletic teams at Sequatchie County High School going back the past 30 years the most successful teams regardless of what sport it was. The team usually had several players that were not only two but in some cases three sport athletes participating on those teams. This is something that I think should be encouraged and supported not just with the boys but with the girls sports as well as it will not only help the kids become better teammates but will help the schools athletic programs succeed on the courts and fields.

This should allow at least for a day or two hopefully longer for some younger guys to get some reps with the what would be the first team to show the coaches and themselves that they deserve a shot at some meaningful playing time this fall. I haven't seen a current roster but there is reports of several first timers out again this spring. Hopefully they will bring an immediate impact to the team on and off the field as last season's new faces did.
