The Sequatchie County Indians traveled to Smithville last night to take on the Tigers of Dekalb County in there next to last scrimmage before next Friday's Sequatchie Valley Jamboree. The Tigers a 3A size school playing in the very tough Region 4-3A with teams like White House that finished (9-2) last season and finished 3rd in the region are picked to win it this year along with Station Camp (10-2) picked 2nd and Pearl Cohn (11-3) picked 3rd in the region this fall after finishing 2nd last year and losing to eventual State runner-up Fulton in the semifinals.
DeKalb County who went (2-8) last year and are picked to once again finish 6th of the seven teams in the region doesn't look like that bad of team the way there fall scrimmages have been going so for the coaches of the region might want to rethink there projections.
Despite some outstanding individual efforts by the Sequatchie boys. They were upended by a larger more physical and faster opponent losing by the score of 6-0.
Just last week DeKalb County beat Sequatchie's fellow Region 3-2A member Tyner Academy 3-1 in a scrimmage.
The Tigers Junior QB Hunter Poteete showed why he was the All-Region Quarterback despite his teams (2-8) record as he if my memory is correct threw for four touchdowns and ran for another. I think all of DeKalb's touchdown scores but one was longer than 25 yards or more. The Indians defense played well against the run including a couple of tackles behind the line of scrimmage but Dekalb which runs a version of the wide open spread offense was just to much to handle for the Indians linebacker's and secondary as it was just to hard for the Indians to cover four or five receivers with a quarterback of Poteete's caliber throwing the ball.
The Indians on offense seemed to still have problems with there assignments as some blocks were missed by lineman and running lanes missed by backs as they are all still learning the offense that Coach Barger has been installing. The offense still moved the ball well at times both through the air and on the ground but a rash of turnovers or a tackle behind the line of scrimmage stalled or stopped drives. The Indians do have the talent and athleticism to compete with almost anyone on there schedule they just have to be the ones to focus and believe it.
I look for an overall much better effort this Tuesday when they host teams that will be much more to the size and speed as well as the style of play the Indians will face this season as they host both Grundy Co. and Sunbright in scrimmage action.
