The Sequatchie County Indians moved to (2-2) overall and (2-0) in District 7-AA action last night but needed some 4th quarter heroics to win 40-26 over the Chargers of Chattanooga Christian.
The Indians were firing on all cylinders out of the gate and looked like they were going to put the game out of reach early leading at the end of the 1st quarter 14-6 on two touchdown runs of 38 and 42 yards by Junior running back Jerry Fain. The Indians took a 24-14 lead into halftime after a touchdown run by Senior Justis Stewart and then a short field goal by Junior kicker Juan Martinez as the first half clock expired.
CCS however wouldn't quit and fought back with the Indians shutting down the Chargers on the ground they got back into the game by going to the air and cut the Indians lead to 24-20.
The CCS folks were smelling upset as there Chargers took a 26-24 lead just three minutes into the 4th and final quarter and it looked like it might come down to a Martinez kick to win it for Indians but that's when Sequatchie County's talented Senior running back Hunter Lewis took over going on a 47 yard touchdown run that took him around, over and through the CCS defense. In one of the best touchdown runs I have seen by a SCHS player in years. Lewis also gets the two point conversion to put the Indians back on top 32-26.
On the next CCS possession Indians Sophomore Jake Pickett picks off a CCS pass. Fain scores his third and final touchdown of the night and also runs in two point conversion to put this one away by the final score of 40-20.
The big news on the night was that Sequatchie County running back Hunter Lewis ran for a total of 310 yards on 24 carries. The most yards by a Sequatchie County running back in 25 years.
