Today is the unofficial start of the 2008 high school football season in Tennessee because fall practice officially starts across the Volunteer state the passing leagues are done and teams can finally strap on the shoulder pads and do some hitting. The first scrimmages will take place across the state on Friday.
Its now just four weeks until the Sequathie County Indians take the field hosting the Pigeon Forge Tigers.
The Indians looked alright at times during the 7 on 7 passing competition which offensively consists of the center to snap the ball to the quarterback and running backs and receivers with no lineman.
On defense its just linebackers and defensive backs with no lineman. SCHS looked good at times and other times seemed to have some mental lapses but you have to remember that they will be a running team when the season starts with some passing thrown in to keep teams off balance. 7 on 7's are more for the teams that will be running spread offenses and throwing all over the field.
The best team appeared to be the new Signal Mountain team they have a good looking young quarterback who has a cannon arm (have heard he was at Baylor). SMHS will only be playing a Junior Varsity schedule this season and will move to a varsity schedule next season and they will likely be district opponents for the Indians with the TSSAA moving from a "region" classification to a new "District" one. South Pittsburg also looked very good and once again very fast at the skill positions.
The other teams on hand were Chattanooga Central, Howard and Coffee County.
Not only will the Sequatchie Co. Indians have a new Head Coach when they take the field this fall but so will a number of there opponents and some may be familiar faces to Indian fans.
The Sequatchie Valley sees four new coaches on the sidelines this fall including SCHS's Chad Barger. The Whitwell Tigers new boss is Tim Taylor a former assistant coach for the Indians and Head Coach at Marion Co. Grundy County also has a new coach after the passing of Chris Pickett. Jim Swafford a onetime assistant at SCHS who was most recently an assistant at Taft Youth Center takes over the Yellow Jackets program. The Indians are scheduled to host Grundy Co. for the QB Club's annual BBQ & Scrimmage on Tuesday Aug. 11th. and will host Whitwell for the homecoming game on Sept. 12th. The final new valley head coach is Troy Boeck at Marion County he moves up from being an assistant coach to the head postion after the firing of Jason Evans who has since moved on to be an assistant coach at Upperman in Baxter, TN.
The other new coaches that the Indians will face this fall are Andrew Bartsch who moves a little ways south to Woodbury to take over the Cannon County Lions after Coach Barger decided to return and take over the Indians program. Bartsch was an assistant coach at Murfreesboro Oakland the Indians travel to Woodbury on Aug. 29th. The other new coach is Bubba Spears a former assistant at Hunters Lane in Nashville is now the head coach at East Literature who the Indians will host on Sept. 5th.
The Sequatchie County Football Stadium will have a new scoreboard when the Indians take the field this fall. Its larger and from what I understand its digital!
Rumor also has it there will be a set of 25 second play clocks in or near each end zone!
All this should leave no doubt that Sequatchie County continues to not only have the best athletic facilities in the Sequatchie Valley but one of the best in Southeast Tennessee.
The website SequatchieOnline has an article introducing your new Sequatchie County Middle School Braves Cheerleaders.

Sequatchie Co. is hosting a 7 on 7 this afternoon around 3:30pm cst.
