The Sequatchie County Indians came out strong and really dominated both sides of the ball in the opening game of the season. On there way to a 37-12 win over the visiting Tigers of Pigeon Forge.
On a great night for high school football the Indians stadium was packed with Sequatchie County fans in what looked like a homecoming or rivalry game crowd. Pigeon Forge also had a good showing for the distance they had to travel. The community-alumni band was on hand to perform along with the Sequatchie County marching band. The packed house wanted to see what new Indians head coach Chad Barger had instilled into this team and they weren't disappointed.
The Indians defense were so hyped up at the start that they had two offsides penalties to start the game but they eventually got settled down and started watching the ball instead of the guy in front of them. Both teams started out slow with the buzzer sounding after the 1st quarter without anyone getting on the board.
The Indians got in the end zone early in the 2nd with a 20 yard touchdown pass from (junior) quarterback Brennan Wilson to (sophomore) receiver Shawn Cooley the PAT was blocked and the Indians lead 6-0.
The Indians next scored on a 33 yard field goal kick by (junior) Jose' Martinez leading the Indians to a 9-0 halftime lead.
Sequatchie began turning it up in the 3rd quarter on a 40 yard touchdown pass from Wilson to (junior) Brandon Dykes who was all alone at the snap of the ball as the Tigers defense went to sleep leaving him wide open at the line of scrimmage. A nice job by the Wilson to see him alone and get the ball over to him quickly and he just out ran the pigeon Forge defense to the end zone for the score. The two point conversion was good on a run by (senior) Brandon Ashby and the Indians lead 17-0.
Brandon Dykes scored again from the 2 yard line the PAT by Martinez was good and the Indians lead 24-0 to end the 3rd quarter of play.
Dykes scored again just three and half minutes into the 4th quarter on a 40 yard run the Martinez PAT was good and it was 31-6.
Brandon Ashby wrapped up the Indians scoring on the night on a 85 yard long fumble return for the score. It looked like he just took the ball away from the Pigeon Forge runner and outran the tigers defense for the score. The final PAT attempt was partially blocked and it hit the left upright and was no good.
The Final score:
Sequatchie County = 37
Pigeon Forge = 12
